biegungen presents: irtijal 20 berlin
20th anniversary edition of beirut’s experimental music festival at ausland berlin

3.–5. Dezember 2020

'Iritjal' is the Arabic word for 'improvisation'. Iritjal is also the name of the festival for contemporary and experimental music founded in Beirut in 2001 by Mazen Kerbaj and Sharif Sehnaoui, the oldest music festival in Beirut and also one of the longest-lasting festivals in post-war Lebanon. It took place every year, has grown steadily since then and has established itself as the most important festival of experimental music in the Middle East. To mark the 20th anniversary of its existence, the Irtijal Festival is cooperating with the concert series biegungen ausland. Eleven musicians from Beirut and thirteen musicians from Berlin take part in the festival. The festival will open on December 3rd with an artist discussion, moderated by Mazen Kerbaj and biegungen curator Mathias Maschat. Three different groups will appear on all evenings, supplemented by a few shorter solo sets. The festival ends on December 5th with a DJ set by the Irtijal Festival director and radio DJ Ziad Nawfal. The festival is accompanied by an exhibition with festival posters from the past years which, taken for themselves, follow a clear artistic line.
