time shifts is a concert series consisting of 4 nights with 5 different constellations. each set brings together so-called "old heroes" and "young stars" from the world of experimental & improvised music. the selected artists come from different generations (born in between 1942 - 1979) and various stylistic backgrounds like noise, free folk, free jazz, electro-acoustic improvisation, minimal music, avant pop, ....

the idea was to invite artists who are all open to challenge and to break down artistic boundaries. In the last 15 and more years the berlin scene (similiar to scenes elsewhere) was constantly in danger of being divided into many small & rivaling mini-fractions - little sub-scenes which often acted with a lot of scepticism and competition against each other. time shifts tries to work against this tendency and wants to start a dialogue between seemingly opposed positions.

time shifts is a co-production of Zangi Music Berlin & ausland and is supported by "Initiative Neue Musik" Berlin e.V. & "Konzert des Deutschen Musikrates"

For the past 40 years British guitarist Mike Cooper has traced a path completely his own. An international musical explorer, performing and recording, solo and in a number of inspired groupings and a variety of genres. Initially a folk-blues guitarist and singer songwriter his work has diversified to include improvised and electronic music, live music for silent films, radio art, field recording and sound installations. He is also a music journalist, writing features for magazines, particularly on Pacific music and musicians, a visual artist, film and video maker, collector of Hawaiian shirts and appears on more than 60 records to date. In 2000, with release of his cd Kiribati, he initiated his own cdr label Hipshot and the genre Ambient Electronic Exotica as a self styled Post Digital Primitivist.
"Cooper was forging connections between folk and experimental musics long before America got New or Wierd.." (The Wire)

PERLONEX was founded in late 1998 and has since then extensively performed and toured in Europe, the USA & Russia. Over the years PERLONEX have created a unique mix of different styles settling somewhere in the no man's land between electro-acoustic, industrial noise, ambient, minimal and often even incorporate elements of psychedelic music. On their tours they have performed in an extreme range of different settings; from academic new music festivals via improv and electronica venues to rough underground and punk/noise clubs.
In 2004 they teamed with Keith Rowe (tabletop guitar) and Charlemagne Palestine (grand piano, keyboards) to celebrate their 5th anniversary in Berlin. Since then Perlonex perform frequently with Charlemagne Palestine on grand piano/organ. Also they collaborate with visual artists Ulrike Flaig who is doing live video feedback.
