Was ist Heimat?

–Was ist Verlust?
Ein Schiff auf dem Trockenen, dichtet in House Boat Lily Michaelidis:

„My house looks like a vessel on dry land. To be exact, it ´s a boat sailing on the slopes of the Toodos Mountains.“ und „Wie jeden März regnet es afrikanischen Wüstensand, und Rachmaninov verführt dich mit rasender Geschwindigkeit an Orte, die Du Dir nie erträumtest.“ (Unerwartetes II)

The series "auslandSPRACHEN" continues its literary program with the readings of Lily Michaelides (Cyprus) and Caca Savic (Germany/Yugoslavia).

What is home? Imagine an airport in the middle of the Cypriot capital Nicosia, the hometown of Lily Michaelides. Closed since 1974, it has meanwhile been a bird paradise, without planes, without humans. Enclosed within a demarcation zone, abandoned, just a few soldiers hanging around. Imagine the waves of the Mediterranean around the oldest and historically most important transit route in our hemisphere; here is Africa, there Asia, there Europe. Greece, Turkey, an Occident-Orient transversal.

"... blurred illusion / of imaginary lines and / sketch of reality ... undeveloped areas will be obviously called illusory since they also are a product of determination"

So writes Caca Savic

—What is a loss?
A ship on dry land, writes Lily Michaelides in House Boat:

"My house looks like a vessel on dry land. To be exact, it´s a boat sailing on the slopes of the Toodos Mountains. " And "As every time in March, it rains African sand, and Rachmaninov seduces you with the speed of light to places you never dreamed of." (Unexpected II)

How do cultural, historical, and political contexts, such as the events in Yugoslavia or the Cyprus crisis, influence the artistic work of a respective author, regardless of an exploration of these contexts in her texts? How do they deal with the topology of loss? How does a transition from one home, from one language to another, work? Is it a double displacement or also a consolation? How is it to be displaced in your own country, to be isolated ethnographically and religiously? On Thursday, the 9th of November, at the penultimate event of auslandSPRACHEN this year, Katharina Deloglu welcomes the poets Lily Michaelides and Caca Savic at ausland and discusses with the two poets these questions.
