Nach Jahren intensiver Aktivität veröffentlichte Rodrigo Amados vorrangige Working Band Motion Trio ihr sechstes Album Desire & Freedom (Not Two), das von Publikum und Kritikern gleichermaßen als eine der stärksten Veröffentlichungen in Amados umfangreicher Diskographie anerkannt und als Platte des Jahres nominiert wurde, unter anderem durch so wichtige Publikationen wie The Wire Magazine oder die spanische Zeitung El País.
Mit den langjährigen Freunden und Mitspielern Miguel Mira (Cello) und Gabriel Ferrandini (Schlagzeug) hat das Motion Trio unter anderem mit so bedeutenden Improvisatoren wie Jeb Bishop, Peter Evans, Steve Swell, Matthew Shipp oder Larry Ochs zusammen aufgenommen oder gespielt. Stets schwang eine tiefe musikalische Empathie mit, die einen Gruppenklang projizierte, in dem der Geist des Bops und das Feuer des Freien im Zeichen der freien Improvisation und der Echtzeitkomposition versammelt sind.
Rodrigo Amado Motion Trio trifft bei diesem besonderen Konzert auf den Free-Jazz-Pionier Alexander von Schlippenbach. Der Pianist Alexander von Schlippenbach, einer der führenden Free-Jazz-Bandleader in Europa, mischt freie und zeitgenössische klassische Elemente, wobei seine Soli in seinen Kompositionen oft die Verbindung zwischen beiden darstellen. Schlippenbach gründete 1966 das Globe Unity Orchestra, um das von der Berliner Jazztagen in Auftrag gegebene Stück Globe Unity aufzuführen. Schlippenbach studierte an der Staatlichen Hochschule für Musik in Köln bei den Komponisten Bernd Alois Zimmermann und Rudolf Petzold. Er spielte 1963 bei Gunther Hampel und war von 1964 bis 1967 im Quintett von Manfred Schoof.
Schlippenbach begann nach 1967 in verschiedenen Bands zu spielen, darunter 1970 das Trio mit Evan Parker und Paul Lovens und ein Duo mit Sven-Ake Johansson, das sie 1976 gegründet hatten. Schlippenbach gab auch viele Soloauftritte. In den späten 80er Jahren gründete er das Berliner Contemporary Jazz Orchestra, dem eine Reihe von angesehenen europäischen Avantgarde-Jazzmusikern angehörten, darunter Evan Parker, Paul Lovens, Kenny Wheeler, Mischa Mengelberg und Aki Takase. After years of intense activity, Rodrigo Amado’s main working band, Motion Trio, released its sixth album, Desire & Freedom (Not Two), acclaimed by audiences and critics alike as one of the strongest releases in Amado’s extensive discography and nominated record of the year by such important publications as The Wire Magazine or Spanish newspaper El País, among many others.
Featuring longtime friends and collaborators Miguel Mira (cello) and Gabriel Ferrandini (drums), Motion Trio has recorded or played with such distinguished improvisers as Jeb Bishop, Peter Evans, Steve Swell, Matthew Shipp or Larry Ochs, among many others, with the music resonating a profound musical empathy, strongly projecting a group sound where the spirit of bop and the fire of free are gathered under the sign of free improvisation and real time composition.
For this special concert, Rodrigo Amado Motion Trio is joined by free jazz pioneer Alexander von Schlippenbach. One of Europe’s premier free jazz bandleaders, pianist Alexander von Schlippenbach’s music mixes free and contemporary classical elements, with his slashing solos often the link between the two in his compositions. Schlippenbach formed The Globe Unity Orchestra in 1966 to perform the piece Globe Unity, which had been commissioned by the Berliner Jazztage. Schlippenbach studied at the Staatliche Hochschule for Musik in Cologne with composers Bernd Alois Zimmermann and Rudolf Petzold. He played with Gunther Hampel in 1963, and was in Manfred Schoof’s quintet from 1964 to 1967.
Schlippenbach began heading various bands after 1967, among them 1970 trio with Evan Parker and Paul Lovens and a duo with Sven-Ake Johansson which they co-formed in 1976. Schlippenbach has also given many solos performances. In the late ’80s, he formed the Berlin Contemporary Jazz Orchestra,which has featured a number ofesteemed European avant-garde jazz musicians including Evan Parker, Paul Lovens, KennyWheeler, Misha Mengelberg and Aki Takase. During the 90`s Duo work with Tony Oxley, Sam Rivers and Aki Takase. 1999 he started the performance and radiorecordings of Thelonius Monk’s complete works, (all the compositions) with Rudi Mahall and his group Die Enttäuschung.
