„Sogo Ishii ist vorrangig berühmt als einer der ersten Punkregisseure, da vor allem mit SHUFFLE oder BURST CITY. Doch es gab auch ruhigere, introvertiertere Phasen. Die japanischen DVD-Boxen THE PUNK YEARS und THE PSYCHELIC YEARS bringen Ishiis Spektrum ziemlich auf den Punkt. Als Höhepunkt der psychedelischen Phase kann zweifelsohne AUGUST IN THE WATER gewertet werden.
Hier trifft New Age auf Science Fiction, wenn eine Profiturmspringerin nach einem Unfall übersinnliche Fähigkeiten entwickelt. Sogo Ishiis verkanntes Kleinod ist meditativ langsam inszeniert und lebt von ruhigen, großartigen Bildern. Ein klassischer Trip Movie.“

„AUGUST IN THE WATER is a very odd film. If you have an interest in Japanese culture, Japanese landscape, or photography/videography -- you may want to check this out. Since I'm not entirely sure what I just watched, I only know that I did enjoy the music and the visuals and the experience as a whole.
I'm gonna throw some words out there and you can make your own decision: Swimming Pool. Meteors. Water. Diving. High school drama. Water. Dolphins. Ancient computers made of stone. Lots of girls in swimsuits. Water. The zodiac. Computer stores. Space. Other confusing things. There you are. I hope that helps. WATER.“
