Encounter Culture #1: European Non-Jazz

8 Jun 2013 - 20:30

Encounter Culture is a new initiative to open live debate between European cities, bringing together music with other disciplines that shape and reflect city culture.

Encounter Culture #1: European "Non-Jazz"

The “European Non-Jazz” theme, with its focus on contemporary life in Paris and Berlin, offers many questions for a potentially controversial debate about the practice of improvised-jazz in Europe.
In the past Paris has been identified as one of the foremost jazz cities of Europe, while Berlin is now arguably the most important centre for improvised music today. What social factors made the jazz scene in Paris change to what it is now? Can such changes be observed in Berlin as well?

The four invited musicians, who are all uniquely influenced by the jazz tradition in their playing, will be asked to consider in how far they align themselves with a musical tradition which originates from Afro-American culture. They will also be asked to reflect on the similarities and differences of the music scenes in Paris and Berlin.

Musicians:
Axel Dörner - trumpet
Hilary Jeffery - trombone
Benjamin Duboc - double bass
Yorgos Dimitriadis - drums

Participant:
Maxi Sickert - journalist (Die ZEIT, Tagesspiegel, RBB) and expert for jazz and improvised music

Discussion moderator:
Mathias Maschat - musicologist

Encounter Culture is co-initiated by ausland and auxxx (http://auxxx.blogspot.com).
