Nicolas Wiese

Nicolas Wiese (geb.1976, Itzehoe)

ist ein audiovisueller Künstler, Diplom-Grafikdesigner und Elektronikmusiker/-komponist. Er lebt und arbeitet seit 2006 in Berlin-Neukölln. Wiese studierte Philosophie und Soziologie an der Universität Hamburg, Illustration und Kommunikationsdesign an der HAW Hamburg / Fachbereich Gestaltung (Diplom 2005) und Sound Studies an der UdK Berlin.

Nicolas Wiese entwickelt Arbeiten in unterschiedlichen Medien und Formaten: Installationen und raumbezogene Aufführungen, elektroakustische Kompositionen, relationale bzw. impro­visierte Musik, grafische Kunst, Radio-Hörstücke und Experimentalfilm. 

Ein starkes Interesse liegt in der Dekonstruktion und Rekonstruktion alltäglicher und medi­aler Fundstücke. Wiederkehrende Themen sind mediale Bilder an sich, deren widersprüchli­cher und suggestiver Kommunikationsgehalt sowie deren Distribution und Wahrnehmung. Dabei spielen Sprache und Schrift, Architektur und Raumwirkung, gebrochene Nostalgie und komplexe Abstraktion zentrale Rollen. Wieses Stop-Motion-Collage-Videoarbeiten, detailreich und im Wortsinne vielschichtig, spielen mit Transparenz und Opazität wie auch mit der Zeitwahrnehmung.

Nicolas Wiese ( born 1976 in Itzehoe, Germany)

is an audiovisual artist, designer and composer/performer of electroacoustic

music based in Berlin, where he has been living and working since 2006.

Wiese studied communication design, illustration and communication theory at the Uni­versity of Applied Sciences in Hamburg (completing his diploma in 2005). Apart from that, he attended Sound Studies at the University of Arts Berlin and courses in philosophy and sociology at the University of Hamburg.

Nicolas Wiese creates works in a wide range of formats and media, for various contexts: installation and spatial performance, contemporary electronic composition, relational and improvised music, graphic art, drawing, collage, radio and experimental film. His work tes­tifies to a strong interest in the deconstruction and reconstruction of found images / found sound / quotations from mass media and everyday life – centring on themes of ambiguous perception, contradiction and the suggestive use of images, of mediated communication. Speech, the written word, architecture, complex abstraction, and refraction of nostalgia all play important roles in Wiese’s aesthetic output. His stop-motion collage video techniques give rise to pieces rich in detail and layers which play with opacity and transparency, and often with the perception of time.
